The Tsum Valley is located to the northwest of the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu. It is a remote, undeveloped valley in the Gorkha district of Nepal, and borders Tibet.
This area has only recently been opened to foreigners, and any developmental efforts have been slow to arrive here. Child mortality rates are high - over 30% of those children born do not make it past five years of age; and maternal mortality rates remain some of the highest in the world.
The people who live here are Buddhist, and most are farmers, trying to feed their families with meager amounts of food they produce or raise. Droughts and political disruptions have been increasing in the last few years, leaving this area even more impoverished.
Although this is one of the most beautiful areas in Nepal, and one of the most sacred, it has many challenges. More to follow.........
